The garfish prefers surface swimming in warmer water and the southern coast of the British Isles is just about its most northerly range.
Habitat
Garfish spend most of their adult life off shore over deep water but just below the surface. They can be found in shallow in-shore waters during the late Spring and Summer.
Best Baits
The garfish has a small mouth, feeding on plankton and small crustaceans less than 3cm. Best bait is a small Mackerel Strip. Best tactic is float fishing using a bait between 2ft-4ft deph.
Biology
The Garfish spends most of its life in deeper waters, often in the breaks between oceanic and coastal waters where plankton densities are highest. They spawn in shallower waters in the Spring.
Identification
A long, thin, unmistakle fish, the garfish is an elegant blue-black with a long snout-like face and small mouth. It can reach a meter in length.
